Educational Qualifications

Dr. Giridhar completed his MBBS, DO (Ophthalmology), and MS (Ophthalmology) at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry, between 1978 and 1983. He received specialized training with a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery from the C.U. Shah Ophthalmic Postgraduate Training Centre, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, and a short-term fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases from the University of Wisconsin, USA.

Specialisation

His clinical focus lies in vitreo-retinal surgery, with a special interest in managing diabetic retinopathy.

Work Experience

Dr. Giridhar has served as the Chief Ophthalmologist and Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Medical Trust Hospital in Cochin from 1984 to 1997. In 1997, he founded the Giridhar Eye Institute, where he has since led the institute as Medical Director and Chief of Vitreo Retinal Surgery.

Positions Held

He has held various notable roles in the field, including Treasurer, Editor, and President of the Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons, President of the Cochin Ophthalmic Club, and Honorary Secretary and President of the Vitreo Retinal Society of India. Additionally, he served as Chief Organizing Secretary of the 70th All Indian Ophthalmological Society meeting in 2012, and he is an active member of several scientific committees, both nationally and internationally.

Memberships

Dr. Giridhar is affiliated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the All India Ophthalmological Society, the Vitreo Retinal Society of India, the Uveitis Society of India, and state ophthalmology societies in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. He is also a member of the Asia Pacific Vitreo Retinal Society and the Rotary Club of Cochin.

Awards & Honours

Over his distinguished career, Dr. Giridhar has received numerous accolades, including the Thiru Kumaraswamy Gold Medal from the University of Madras, the J.M. Pahwa Award from the Vitreoretinal Society of India, and the Dr. S. Tony Fernandez Gold Medal from the Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons. His contributions have also earned him international recognition, such as the Distinguished Service Award from the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, the XOVA (Excellence in Ophthalmic Vision Award) from ESASO, and the ASRS Honor Award in 2017. Recent honors include the Dr. B. Patnaik Oration Award (2023) and the Prof. Hem K. Tewari Lecture awarded by AIIMS in 2024.
